In February 2000, Hampton Roads Eye Associates (HREA) was fortunate to gain the expertise of Dr. Shelton. She specializes in the medical and surgical treatment of cataracts and glaucoma. She also takes advantage of the latest technology including the SLT Laser for Selective Glaucoma Laser Treatment, the HRT for custom optic nerve imaging and analysis, and much more. With the new state of the art ReSTOR® and ReZoom™ Intra-ocular lens implants, Dr. Shelton can offer patients with cataracts, visual freedom from bifocals or reading glasses.

Dr. Karen Shelton received her Bachelor of Science in Chemical Engineering from Howard University in 1985 and went on to complete her Doctorate of Medicine at the University of Michigan Medical School in 1991.

In Detroit, Michigan, Dr. Shelton completed her internship at Henry Ford Hospital. She completed her residency at NYCHHC with Columbia University at Harlem Hospital in New York City, New York. At the University of Maryland Medical Center, Dr. Shelton completed a fellowship in Glaucoma.

Licensed by the state of Virginia, Dr. Shelton is a Fellow of the American Academy of Ophthalmology, the Association for Research in Vision & Ophthalmology (ARVO), the Contact Lens Association of Ophthalmologists, the American Medical Association, and the National Medical Association. She is also a Diplomate of the American Board of Ophthalmology.

Dr. Shelton also participates in various glaucoma clinical trial studies, and has co-authored research articles in major Ophthalmology journals. At Eastern Virginia Medical School in Norfolk, Virginia, she is an Assistant Professor of Clinical Ophthalmology in the Department of Ophthalmology.
