Diabetes and Alzheimer's: Any connection?

A growing body of evidence suggests a link between diabetes and Alzheimer's disease. One long-term study sponsored by the National Institute on Aging reported that diabetes was associated with a 65-percent increased risk of Alzheimer's. The cause isn't clear. Previous research has linked diabetes to a decline in cognitive function, including memory problems. Some scientists theorize that diabetes may cause glucose to accumulate in the brain, which could damage brain cells. Taking steps to prevent diabetes or control existing diabetes may help reduce the risk of Alzheimer's.
