Question
I have diabetes, and I'm wondering if honey is a good replacement for sugar in my diet?
Answer
Probably not. Honey actually has more carbohydrates and more calories than granulated sugar does. Unlike sugar, honey provides some minerals — but only in trace amounts. Honey is also sweeter than sugar, so you can substitute a smaller amount of honey for sugar in some recipes. However, the calories and carbohydrates you save are nominal. If you prefer the flavor of honey, go ahead and use it — in moderation. Be sure to count the carbohydrates in honey as part of your eating plan.
Sweetener (1 tablespoon) | Carbs | Calories |
| Honey | 17 | 64 |
| Granulated sugar | 13 | 50 |
