Question
Can men get bladder infections?
Answer
Yes, men can get bladder infections (cystitis). However, bladder infections are less common in men than in women because men have a longer urethra — which makes it more difficult for bacteria to reach the bladder and cause infection.
In men, the most common cause of bladder infection is enlarged prostate (benign prostatic hyperplasia, or BPH), which occurs when the prostate gland grows and impairs the flow of urine from the bladder. Because the bladder doesn't empty completely, it is more susceptible to bacteria growth and infection.
Other causes of bladder infection in men include:
- Kidney stones
- Urethral stricture
- Anal intercourse
Signs and symptoms of bladder infection include:
- Frequent urination
- Strong, persistent urge to urinate
- Burning sensation when urinating (dysuria)
- Low-grade fever
- Cloudy urine with a strong odor
- Blood in urine (hematuria)
A doctor can confirm a diagnosis of a bladder infection by a urine test. Treatment depends on the underlying cause, but typically includes antibiotics.
