Question
What is Mayo Clinic's opinion of shock wave therapy for Peyronie's disease?
Answer
Peyronie's disease refers to abnormal curvature of the penis during erection. Although primarily used as a treatment for kidney stones, shock wave therapy (extracorporeal shock wave lithotripsy) has also been used to treat Peyronie's disease. However, studies evaluating the effectiveness of this treatment for Peyronie's disease have had mixed results. Some studies have found that shock wave therapy restores normal erections and reduces pain associated with Peyronie's disease. Other studies have found no benefit. Further research is needed to fully evaluate what role, if any, shock wave therapy should play as a treatment for Peyronie's disease.
