Semen allergy

Semen allergy

Question

I often have a burning sensation in my vagina after my partner has ejaculated. What might cause this?

Tammy
Georgia

Answer

Rarely, some people are allergic to proteins in their partner's semen. As a result, they may develop redness, burning and swelling where the semen has contacted their skin , usually in the outer genital area. A small number of people may have a systemic response, including hives, generalized itching and difficulty breathing.

If your symptoms occur consistently and are troubling, see your doctor. The best way to prevent an allergic reaction is to use a condom — if you are not allergic to latex. But other allergy treatments may be useful as well. If you are trying to get pregnant, your doctor may recommend artificial insemination with sperm washed free of semen proteins to prevent a reaction.
