Riverside Nursing School Receives $1.1 Million Donation

Newport News, VA. Riverside School of Professional Nursing recently received a donation of $1,182,868, the largest one-time donation ever received by the school. The gift came following the settlement of the estate of Ruby Pope Drumm, a 1948 graduate of the Riverside School of Professional Nursing, who died in 2004. The school will use the donation to fund scholarships for registered nursing students.

“We are so grateful for this gift to the profession of nurses at a time when nurses are needed so much, due to shortages that are expected to grow,” said Tracee Carmean, Vice President of Education for Riverside Health System. “This donation will allow us to provide substantial, ongoing scholarships to our registered nursing students.”

Widely recognized for its excellence, the Riverside School of Professional Nursing has graduated over 2200 nursing students and recently was selected to participate in the Carnegie Foundation Study on Nursing Education.

The Riverside School of Professional Nursing held its first graduation in 1918, in the Nurses’ Home near 50th Street in Newport News. Growth in enrollment resulted in construction of a new three-story building in 1951 on 51st Street in Newport News. The school moved to the campus of Riverside Hospital on J. Clyde Morris Boulevard, when the facility opened in 1963.

Today, the nursing school is part of Riverside School of Health Careers, located at 316 Main Street in Newport News. The campus features 40,000 square feet of classrooms, laboratories and learning areas devoted to training students to become registered nurses, licensed practical nurses, radiologic technologists, surgical technologists, nursing aides and professionals in other allied health areas.
